Before you Go to Rome.
After getting charged for bread which I didn't order and thus expected to be free at an Italian restaurant, I made up my mind to reject bread put in front of me for future dining at restaurants. So at lunch today, I asked for tap water and rejected the bread they served. The lady knew I didn't wanna pay for water but she still came over with a bottle of mineral water and insisted that I drank from it. She said it was cheap. Lol she lies with a very deceptive smile. I closed one eye. Regretfully I must say
3 euros for a bottle of water. More on that later.
When I asked for the bill, I was horribly surprised to find that I was still charged two euros for the bread. She insisted that it was service charge at one dollar per head. Dayum I wish I could speak Italian so I can stand up for my rights. Anyway I ended up having to pay an additional five euros for nothing at all.
Outraged, I was determined to do some research on service charge in Italy before dinner.
If you ever go to Rome or Italy in general, read what this website has to say:
http://www.walksofitaly.com/blog/travel-tips/how-not-to-get-ripped-off-eating-in-italy
Reading that a few times through and taking down some notes got me some pretty good results ;)
We had a late dinner because the restaurant we wanted to go to was packed so we came home which was when I did my research Haha
At 9.15pm there was still a line albeit shorter. We waited for ages only to witness two (LOCAL) customers who were behind us get served first. You can imagine how grumpy a customer I became. I took the waiting ttime to re read the above link and search the menu for fine print about service charge. Heh. Very very happy to not see anything on service charge.
So after waiting for twenty minutes at the FRONT of the line we got a table. Famished? We quickly asked for menus so we could point or what we had decided on while waiting. When they served the bread we said no thanks. We decided to be nice and order water even though we could have home water just a five minute walk up the road. When the bill came and the sneaky bread charge stared me right in the face I told the owner that we had no bread. He tried to explain that it was a service charge. I then pulled out my well rehearsed (in my head) Italian for "its not stated in your menu". He insisted that I paid up and left. I just at there starting at the bill quite stressed and scared actually Haha. But hey. I acted like I was all cool as I thought of what to do next. Then he came back and I repeated that his thieving service charge was not in the menu. Then.. He caved. Lol. Man! It's really by have though. Mummy was sitting there passing for me lol. These sneaky tourist trappers. Owell. Feels like victory though to get the bill changed.
Not sure if I will be as lucky next time. And I'm sure the people at that restaurant won't want us back. Heh.
