do what you want

Lakkis. here are the associated things that come to mind when i think of him.
- a certain resilient commitment to doing what he wants
- boldness in doing things the unconventional way
- a strange kind of.. exploring direction. not that he knows where he wants to be, but he seems very intentional about the directions he takes in exploring the possible paths that lead to the place that he could possibly want to be.

i supposed i find that intriguing because none of my peers seem to have that kind of vibe about them even though some of us talk about it a fair bit.

many in my circle of friends wanna do what we really wanna do and we're all about that. do work that you enjoy. and we can go on about dreamy ideas - some of which have a lot of substance in them.

then today a question suddenly hit me - is all this talk about "doing what you want" a symptom of something non-so-good in our generation? ok fine dont even talk about generation. it just hit me that we keep going on about doing what you want and following your heart, and that it all might just seem pretty individualistic. i'm wondering what will ground us in some solid foundation that will help up take off. sometimes i seems to want to fly before i've build the plane. and building the plane's lotsa hard work and discipline. perhaps then what our parents' generation has been telling us about working hard still holds true after all. maybe not completely true. working hard doesn't necessarily give you the results you're after. maybe it's about grounding ourselves to be disciplined, tenacious. and grounding ourselves in a strong value system that will undergird what we do, how we do and why we do. with good direction.
